The Wikipedia Game
Objective:
To be the first player to reach a predetermined number of points.
Materials:
Computer or mobile device with internet access
Rules:
1. Start on any Wikipedia page.
2. Click on any non-red link (i.e., not a link to an external website or a file).
3. Continue clicking on links, avoiding red links.
4. You can only visit each page once.
5. If you get stuck (i.e., you don't see any non-red links), you can click on the "Random article" link to start over.
Scoring:
2 points: For clicking on a non-red link to a page with fewer than 10,000 words.
4 points: For clicking on a non-red link to a page with 10,000-100,000 words.
6 points: For clicking on a non-red link to a page with over 100,000 words.
Winning:
The first player to reach the predetermined number of points wins.
Common targets are 100, 200, or 500 points.
Tips:
Explore different topics: Don't stick to one subject area.
Look for connections: Try to find links between different pages.
Use the search bar: If you're having trouble finding a specific topic, use the search bar to jump to it.
Avoid getting stuck: If you're about to click on a red link, try a different link instead.
Have fun: The most important thing is to enjoy the game and learn new things along the way!
Variations:
Timed game: Give players a set amount of time (e.g., 30 minutes) to reach the highest score.
Themed game: Restrict the topics that players can explore to a specific theme (e.g., history, science, art).
Reverse game: Start on the destination page and try to reach the starting page by clicking only on non-red links.
