Introduction to the Game of Dou Dizhu in English

Background:

Dou Dizhu, also known as Landlord, is a popular multiplayer card game in China. It is played with a deck of 54 cards and is typically enjoyed by three players.

Objective:

The goal of Dou Dizhu is to be the first player to get rid of all their cards.

Game Setup:

1. Shuffle the deck of 54 cards.

2. Each player is dealt 17 cards.

3. The remaining three cards are placed face down in the center of the table to form the "stock".

Bidding:

1. Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, each player bids on how many tricks they believe they can take.

2. The minimum bid is 1, and the maximum bid is 3.

3. The player with the highest bid becomes the "landlord" and plays against the other two players, who become the "peasants".

Gameplay:

1. The landlord leads with any card or combination of cards.

2. The other players must follow suit if possible. If they cannot follow suit, they can play any card.

3. The player who plays the highest card in the suit that was led wins the trick and leads the next one.

4. Aces are the highest cards, followed by Kings, Queens, Jacks, 10s, 9s, 8s, 7s, 6s, 5s, 4s, 3s, and 2s.

5. Special combinations of cards, such as pairs, triples, and straights, can beat single cards.

6. When a player plays a combination of cards, the other players must beat that combination with a higher one.

7. The stock can be used to help players make combinations. Players can pick up the top card from the stock once per turn.

Winning:

1. The landlord wins if they take as many tricks as they bid.

2. The peasants win if they prevent the landlord from taking as many tricks as they bid.

3. If the landlord wins, the peasants must pay the landlord an amount of money equal to the number of tricks they bid.

4. If the peasants win, they split the pot of money that was bid.

Variations:

There are numerous variations of Dou Dizhu with different rules and scoring systems. Some common variations include:

Progressive Dou Dizhu: The number of tricks that the landlord must take increases with each round.

Four-Player Dou Dizhu: A variation played with four players, with two landlords and two peasants.

Joker Dou Dizhu: A variation that includes two Joker cards that can be used as wild cards.
