a b c d e f g h i

Chinese Chess Rules:
Objective:
To checkmate (capture) the opponent's general.
Setup:
- The game is played on a 9x9 grid board.
- Each player has 16 chess pieces:
- 1 General (K)
- 2 Advisors (A)
- 2 Elephants (E)
- 2 Chariots (R)
- 2 Cannons (C)
- 5 Soldiers (S)
Movement:
- Each type of piece moves differently on the board:
- General: Moves one step vertically or horizontally.
- Advisor: Moves diagonally one step at a time, staying within the palace.
- Elephant: Moves two steps diagonally, and then one step either vertically or horizontally.
- Chariot: Moves any number of steps horizontally or vertically.
- Cannon: Moves like a chariot, but it must jump over another piece before capturing an opponent's piece.
- Soldier: Moves one step forward (or across the river) on its first move, and then one step sideways or forward thereafter.
Gameplay:
- Players take turns moving one piece at a time.
- The player with the red pieces moves first.
- Players can move any piece that is not threatened by an opponent's piece.
- If a piece moves to a square occupied by an opponent's piece, it captures the opponent's piece and removes it from the board.
- The general cannot be captured or move into a position where it is threatened by an opponent's piece.
- If the general is threatened, the player must move it or block the threat.
Check and Checkmate:
- If the general is threatened, it is in "check."
- The player in check must make a move to remove the threat.
- If the general cannot be protected, it is "checkmate" and the game is over.
Common Rules:
- Players cannot move a piece through a piece of their own color.
- If a piece moves to a square occupied by an opponent's piece, it captures the opponent's piece.
- The game is a draw if neither player can checkmate the other or if the game enters a stalemate (no legal moves are available).
